Abstract: Four studies investigated the self-presentation strategies used by those high and low in self-esteem to navigate a negative public image, using methodologies adapted from Baumeister and his colleagues (Baumeister, 1982; Baumeister & Jones, 1978). Three of four studies failed to replicate the compensatory self-enhancement effect for participants at any level of self-esteem. One study revealed compensatory self-enhancement, more favorable self-presentation after a negative public image than after a positive image on traits unrelated to the public image, among those very high in self-esteem. In addition, this study also revealed compensatory self-protection, the denial of negative traits unrelated to a public image, among participants at all levels of self-esteem. The relative reliability of the compensatory enhancement effect is discussed as well as the importance of distinguishing between favorable self-presentation designed to identify with positive characteristics and to deny the presence of negative characteristics.
